Shedding light on menopause: breaking the silence in the workplace

Menopause, which will affect all women at some point in their lives, is a topic rarely discussed. Yet, its impact on women’s lives, particularly in the workplace, is profound and often overlooked.

Navigating through the myriad of physical and psychological symptoms during menopause can be daunting. Although symptoms vary from one woman to another, menopause is not only hot flushes, mood swings, fatigue, and memory lapses. It can also be (non-exhaustive list):

headaches
anxiety
bouts of depression
changes in microbiome
digestive concerns
constipation and bloating
pelvic floor dysfunction
low sex drive
changes in body composition
gain in visceral fat
sudden spike in cholesterol
insulin resistance
ringing ears, tinnitus
decreased eyesight
periodontal disease (receding, sore gums)
dental issues
brittle nails
thinning hair
dry, itchy skin
vertigo
palpitations
increased risk of CVD + inflammation
arthritis
joint pain
frozen shoulder
poor sleep (resulting in compromised cognition and ability to reason)
loss of muscle mass and bone density
Etc…

Needless to say, the journey through this natural transition phase is anything but smooth sailing. Unfortunately, the workplace often remains ill-prepared to support women during this crucial phase of life.
The psychological toll of managing these symptoms while striving to excel professionally can be exhausting, leading to decreased productivity and increased stress levels.

What’s more concerning is that decision-making regarding menopause-related issues, such as retirement age policies, is often dominated by men. Women’s voices are sidelined, and their unique experiences are overlooked in these discussions. This systemic ignorance perpetuates a cycle where the needs of more than half the population – we are 51% of all humans! – are outright ignored.

It’s time to change this narrative.

As women, we must advocate for ourselves, and society as a whole, must advocate for workplaces that acknowledge and accommodate the challenges faced by women experiencing menopause. By fostering a culture of understanding and support, we can create environments where women can thrive at every stage of their careers.

Let’s break the silence, normalize the discussion in the workplace, challenge the stigma, and ensure that menopause is not a barrier to women’s professional success. Together, let’s pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable future.
